Pretty much always been into heavy lineweights and didn't start drawing until about 2 years ago. Always did airbrushing and spray art. Paper is a newish medium for me.

Shit...for a minute there I thought you'd done it. Was about to pack up my pencil case and head silently for the door

I drew this one back in the summer, though I never got round to adding colour to it.

While it's an original drawing / composition, it obviously lends from the standard motifs of nautical tattoos, and the top half unashamedly references (rips off?) Rich Warburton's colour technique.

It was originally a pencil drawing but then I imported into Procreate on an iPad Pro with Apple Pencil to render. Interestingly, I tested the colour scheme on paper first, using Prismacolor pencils. I could get the same result with the blends but was taking three times as long.

You're probably right about more work, funny how you don't see it till someone else points it out. It's a fairly small piece, looks more grainy enlarged. I'll probably hit another as I only have so much patience for each drawing...I'm like a puppy

I also started out with a HB mechanical pencil (his left cheek) then found I had a 6B hanging round...which I prefer. Next one will be 6B all the way

The grains are no problem imo, but you could size up a bit anyway, it's usually easier to get details right when a little bigger. And yeah, softer pencils usually work better with portraits, they are more sensitive to your movements with the hand which suits portraits very well, and also makes better contrast of course

Daily scribble - channeling Dawber.

Do any of you follow Jody Dawber? I do, and frankly her output in terms of volume is astounding. I'm estimating 3 or 4 decent size pieces per day, most days. AND all of her designs look fresh, as in original. I notice she's also working all over the world most the time.

She's towards neo-trad with a feminine edge, lots of ribbons, pastel colours and cutesy motifs (no criticism...I'm in awe).

Anyway, seems like when I come to design a new piece, I'm always half looking at someone else's or being a bit too slavish to a ref pic.

So tonight I gave myself the challenge of not looking at anything except my paper, start to finish. I was aiming for a Dawberesque neo-trad, and I definitely wanted blackbirds (or something that approximates blackbirds). Here's the result in draft form...definitely not finished but I'm pleased so far

Had a lot of fun playing around with this, love the reflect/symmetry tool in any drawing app. Did this one in sketchbook Pro with Apple Pencil.

I recognise that it would take a skilled tattooer to get that much detail on a lady's wrist

Daily scribble - was asked about a squirrel tattoo for a lady. Thinking about a neotraditiona style (not strictly the motifs) starting with this tonal sketch as a first draft to show the (potential) client.

Was the squirrel drawn or done on a computer? All these graphic drawing tools make me feel uneasy. I spent ages trying to achieve the carved out lettering effect on a drawing the other day, then my son showed me how in 'paint' you can press a key a any word can be transformed into that style, perfectly, instantly. Pencils in the bin!

@fylfot I use an Apple Pencil (stylus) on an iPad. Essentially it's like drawing with a real pencil or a pen, or a paint brush, with a very natural feel. Based on that, there's virtually no learning curve, anyone could pick one up and start making drawings in minutes. Very different to the original computer drawing apps like Adobe Illustrator, which provides a more mechanical-type process. I use Illustrator for some aspects of my Graphic Design work (that's my professional background, practising and teaching).
