I'm a little envious! Nice dilemma it sounds What are your choices? The job you have now or the apprenticeship? What do you do now (if it's okay I ask!) and do you like that very much? Hm and then there's the pay bit.....will you get paid at all as an apprentice?

It's really tricky, at the moment I work full time and it pays the rent and bills, any massive cuts aren't even workable as our rent is so high anddddd we are buying a house soon. I'm going to have to try and see if I can just make it work. Will have a meeting with work Monday to see if I can get flexi of some kind. I'm an insurance broker currently...I sort of fell into it 12 years ago

Ah, yes, I totally understand! I do have to say though, that you draw very good and I think that if you would go for the tattoo job life I'm very convinced you'll have a good future there! I'm not just saying that, i believe it is so. The kind of drawings you do are very popular in the tattooing world. As i hope you are aware of! And I do believe it is very possible to get a more than a decent sum of money (haha my crazy english! Too tired to write better than this ) to live on! I do hope you can come to a good agreement with your job! Oh how many exclamationmarks I'm using ! Of course it is vital to be able to pay ones bills - but buying a house, couldn't that wait another year..... till you have been an apprentice and can start your own business? Look at Jamie! It's not impossible at all!

I understand the surreal feeling! Maybe you have to sit down and think of what would make you happy in 10 years time. Keeping the job you have, or doing this change.

It's just so complicated I've done some research today about the possibility of taking a part time job, but it's impossible to live off. As for waiting for a house, it's just not an option, our rent is pretty high but a mortgage would reduce the cost drastically and actually make an apprenticeship more possible.

I'm going to see if there is a possibility of 3 days but I don't think it'll fly. I'm really frustrated; I may have to let this one go I want this change more than anything but maybe now isn't the right time for me.

Invested in a Wacom Cintiq last weekend so im now trying to learn to draw in digital form.. not as easy as I thought. Amazing bit of kit though.
Anyway heres something iv been using as a test piece. Drawn using photoshop CS5

I just googled Wacom! You guys are somewhere far into the future, I have no idea what it is I just about cope with a pencil!

On that note I did this for the flash comp but decided I didn't like it so much. But here it is anyway.

It is really good, mine is the cintiq 13hd. Working area is a bit smaller than A4 paper but great for me as a non pofessional part time user.
It is fairly pricey but i found one good as new on ebay for just over half price.

Im using it with photoshop cs5 which obviously is a fantastic programme anyway. You have so much control with the pen, (pressure for line weight & angle of the brush) and it feels quite natural.
I think it made me more relaxed with my drawing aswell because i can easily change anything im not happy with so im not as stiff with the pen.

Drawing straight onto the screen is great and it keeps up with handspeed, (so long as your not flying around the screen anyway). There are also shortcut buttons around the screen which can be customised to do what you want. I have the ctrl & alt keys there aswell as pan & a few others.

What i dont like at the moment about digital drawing is that it doesnt look natural. This i think is down to me not having enough knowledge so over next few weeks im going to try and learn how to create natural looking watercolour art. Its all about the paper & pen settings in PS.

If you can spare the ££ then id advise you to start hunting a good one down on ebay.

Yes you can surely get it to look more natural. Do you make the settings in cs5 or on the wacom, so to say? If in cs5 you have almost unlimited setting possibilities. Also one can use the differences compared to drawing/painting irl and make something of that technique. So to say.

I also LOVE that you can change and erase and use layers and save copies and compare! Makes me crazy irl when you have to go in with the same drawing and try something and it didn't work. *that was it. Next drawing*

I'm a bit concerned over pen speed though, speaking for myself. I move the pen very quickly when drawing.

Is everything exactly in cs5 on wacom as in cs5 on computer? (Maybe a stupid question). Do you have layers?

The wacom is not a seperate tablet, it plugs into your computer & it acts like another monitor
Yeah its great for the freedom it gives you to experiment without having to throw away your attempts and restart every time...

Pen speed on my machine does have a slight delay when im sketching out ideas at speed but that could be because my laptop is not that powerful? Better computer = better speed.

Iv found a few photoshop tutorials now for watercolour painting in PS so ill be having a play with that over the weekend.

It is strange learning a new medium but good fun. Not drawn so much in months.

I wouldn't mind getting to grips with Photoshop; I think this would be good for sharpening my line drawings? I need to sit down and play with it, I've had it on the computer for months!!

You can get some nice natural looking sketches with some custom brushes and paper texture, and for water colour looks I have a brush that I use with the blending tool

I like it - I used a similar photo as a reference alongside a real image. I hate hate hate circles lol. Bought a circle and oval stencil to get cleaner lines when doing flash at least. I dread tattooing them one day

Over layered? You mean you did too much hatching? I think you could have done even more Not in the same "strength", but if you had made the now hatched areas darker you could have hatched more areas around but lighter. If you get what I mean. But it's nice now too. And it's a matter of taste how much to hatch. Maybe you prefer lighter shading (than I do )

1kr var ju sjukt billigt. Men det kanske var just för att du måste kolla på skärmen inte på plattan? Man vill ju ha den fördelen att kunna kolla där man ritar.

You have to hold your hand in a weird way and press down to make use of the pressure sensitivity. Small things that I feel after a couple of days of intense painting. There are a few tips on how to avoid pain in your wrist but I haven't bothered since I don't really HAVE to paint digitally.

There are cheap tablets and there are expensive ones. There's now the Wacom Companion which is basically a laptop you can use as a tablet. Looks amazing but it's expensive as hell!

The idea came suddenly yesterday... Sorry for the quality, its taken with the webcam. And i dont know how to say it in english but the webcam changes the picture. I mean, the thumb is supposed to beto the left side of the drawing.

I like that very much @NinaRose11803 I'm just thinking it looks a bit "dotty", I'm a little curious what would happen if you inverted it? So black is white and yellow is black.

@DanniellaJ It looks very nice imo, but I'm thinking the proboscis (could that really be the term??????? Sounds weird It's snabel in Swedish. Anyway, the noses of the elephants) look a bit "too real" with all wrinkles. I think. You have drawn it well, but if it would be a tattoo I think it would look better if they matched the style of the ears better. Or am I being too picky now??

@KarosLajos Looking really good!! Have you done it by hand or in photoshop?

Testing my English Malin lol. I had to look at the English dictionary!! My intention was to make the drawing have depth and slight realism using just pen, but in keeping with "balance" of the nose. As a tattoo I'm not sure how transferable this detail would be but id love to try and mimick it as a tattoo. Not sure how!
Lol. I was trying to include more dark areas on the ears but I agree the drawing could be more similar...but steering away from realism (not that I think it looks particularly realistic) I wanted to include a traditonal feel to it too...just because I love it.

First i sketched up the half face on paper.
I did the mirroring and some change in ps and printed out this sketch, on to the artistic paper.
After that, i have made shading with pencils, pen, & airbrush in bw.
Final stage i scanned in again and filled up with color in ps.
(I reality more better like this pic... my scanner is an old cr@p)
With ps make my work easier & quicker usually.
Thats why i'm always using it, if it's possible.(Why not?)

@skullianz That's the same as you showed a sketch of before, right?

Its a re-working of a previous concept, the snakes head is the same, but that is the third variation of the body and the kanji in the centre is "goat" I was trying to symbolize several elements so its a fire snake (hence the firey underbelly and smoke) and an earth goat (so cracked soil)

@Danniella waffling is ok! And I shouldn't have pointed out the noses, I should have said that ears and noses kind of don't match right now - imo!!, someone else might think differently.

@KarosLajos Good idea to mirror it ps is perfect for working with pics! I asked how you did because I was curious I certainly do not think it is "better" to draw by hand and not use ps Just so you know.

@skullianz I remember the other one you did, and I liked that one but there were some things I pointed out. However, this one I like better, I think it's really nice.
