Yeah, it's the iPad Pro, which is a bit pricey. I used to have a Wacom Cintiq (companion), which I got a good price for when the iPad Pro landed. Personally, I think the Cintiq is better, as it has friction between the tip and screen (like pencil and paper), but it was built on an Android tablet and the drawing apps were simply terrible.

I use the Procreate app on the iPad pro, which (at the moment) is simply without competition on any tablet.

A couple of 'unreferenced' pieces at the very initial sketch stage, mainly working out composition and colour ideas. Also in pencil on paper rather than directly on my iPad. To be fair not much difference, other than loads of eraser debris in my lap and constant sharpening. The images are about 140-160mm tall.

I'm trying to discipline myself to make more original designs by not looking at other visual material, tattoos or otherwise, while I'm working. I should stress that is just for the concept stage, I'll definitely be looking at some swan pictures to finalise that one. I am allowing myself to be influenced from memory, which I guess would be hard not to, and I have a kind of visual goal style in mind for the finals, based on my current heroes / heroines (Jody Dawber et al, Scragpie is another).

Just grabbed this from Apple website:

The smaller (new) iPad Pro starts at £549.

I've definitely found over the years that Apple products have great resale value, especially with original packaging. Since V1 iPad I've always sold and upgraded, normally securing sales in hours (iPhones too). Maybe worth pricing your iPad up in eBay. Look for listings that have bids to see the 'actual' value customers place on the model.

Made the owl months ago, though not necessarily thinking tattoo. Few leaves and flowers and it would seem to fit the bill. Be adding colour as part of my Prismacolor training (which is why I re-worked it)...the new technology of pencils

Daily scribble #4 and I'm feeling a style emerging in these unreferenced pieces. All those years of copying characters from the Beano (uk Comic) when I was a kid. Btw I am slowly colouring these pieces with coloured pencils.

Nothing to be nervous of, really nice drawing! I agree with Jerry about the red parts though. They seem a little bit off in the drawing to me. But they're good for the composition, if you did something else with them or changed them it would look real nice I'm sure.

I miss this thread too although I haven't ever posted much here.

Unlike the others, i wouldnt alter the anchor, its a great example of 1970's tattoo styling, you seem like a tradinionalist at heart

Almost did more triangular tips, but in the end I decided on the spade shape.

To me I lost it a bit with the coloring. Had issues with blending and saturation. I see other people's colored pencil work and it looks so smooth, but I can't get the same effect. Maybe it's technique or maybe paper not sure

I think it must be a mix of paper quality and technique. But mostly technique, or rather patience. But I have LOTS of patience when it comes to drawing, but doing smooth blending with color pencils is hopeless. But it could be that I don't like working with color, maybe I lack patience for just that But give it a try! Probably only a matter of practice practice practice. And actually I think you're already doing pretty good.

Only skimmed through the first few pages but honestly blown away with some of you guys artwork.....inspirational at best.
Looking at the level has just made me realise I need to up mine.

Just on a helpful note which I feel has helped me no end is Mike Sibleys "From line to life" book is an investment for graphite technique. I have bought a fair few books but his book is a complete other level to the rest.

Probably a bit beginner level for you guys but his techniques are really good with graphite.
Also Jd Hillberry,i'm doing a combination of both of their techniques and training, it is progressing my drawing no end.
Anyway i'm sure you have your own paths and to be completely honest i'm blown away and excited to post some progress to get all your opinions.

Here's what I've draw so far, most of them from online references with slight changes, I'm trying to do a sketch a day as a way to improve my technique.
There's a lot to improve and some of them to finish, i've been using hairspray to avoid any smudging but they ruin the drawings a bit (became much darker and loose detail), anyway i'm really struggling with the creative part (improvising) , i used to be able to do it really quickly but not nowdays , so weird, oh well hopefully this will improve with time and practice.

Your drawings look pretty nice, I don't know how much experience you had from before, what level should be expected from you ? Imo thre rose you did with a technical pen is the best because you added some personal feeling to it. From what I can tell of the face of the mermaid that's something you need to practice a lot more on, if you're going to do more realistic style.

Good light source practice on the geometrical figures ???

Aparently i love to dig up stuff ehehe, but this seemed a good thread, i used to do some portraits when i was 11 and then stopped completely xD , i've always been good building and creating stuff tho so i might have an artistic vein somewhere so drawing might be the next thing i need to practice on, regarding the drawings the rose i did it during a night shift actually in a nearly pitch black room eheheh turn out alright i guess is more realistic to a tattoo machine than the pencil (no erasing allowed), i agree with you the mermaid face and hair omg what a nightmare, and hands i defenitely need to practice human anatomy i really like the realistic style, oh well i'm still wondering what to draw today ehehehe, i hope we all start using this thread again it really looked amazing back on the day .

Thanks mate, I feel you, I used a 5b for the darker tones, probably next time I'll get the 8b, is the first portrait I've done in about 17years but I think is what I really fancy doing, next I need to try traditional pieces , well is it just me digging this thread?

Yeah nice one. I really like it (especially after 17 years) and just think a broader tonal range will do it more justice ?

Good thing then that you know you can practice on roses ? Skull looks good, I think the jaw/teeth needs a little correction though. Upper and lower part are pointing in slightly different directions.

The Depp face - you really caught his looks, expression, eyes. That's excellent!!! Much more important, and difficult, than the hair. Hair is just a matter of practice.

And a lot more black needed overall ?

Cheers mate, yeah definitely that’s a good shout! I don’t normally finish a drawing in a single sitting, I tend to get a bit done every night once the kids are in bed and sit with my wife whilst she’s watching tele. So probably a few more days to go on this one!

Yeah I agree with MalligaMallan. I think you’re getting the shapes right, so it looks ok from a distance but zoomed in you can see how rushed it is. If you’re trying to do one a day why not do smaller images and spend more time on detail. Or work on the larger images but over a few sessions? I think that lion would look great if some time was spent on different textures and tonal values. Also with drawing fur, people get good results by drawing the clumps/groups of hair rather than individual hairs. There’s some really good videos on YouTube on drawing hair and fur.

Lovely detail in the iris, I feel it is dark enough, sometimes for pure darks I would use black inks. Looks sweet so far.
