Here’s a little better lighting. Camera’s always seem to take away from stuff like this no matter the lighting though.

Very nice Josh!

If i may, i think you should try to work on texture rendering, and maybe work with more than one or two pencils to do so.

You know, like how to render stone, leaves, human skin, fur, wood, metal, glass, reflections, transparency...

There's a well-known technique which consists of doing multiple squares or rectangles on a A4 paper, and fill each of them with a particular texture. You will write underneath what is rendered, and when the page is finished you'll be able to see what you need to adjust or work more over.

I believe you are doing well over anatomy, and composition, shadows/tones/contrast are really fine, but you seem to have only one way to draw textures. Your gigantic hand looks like wood (instead of human skin), or if that was meant to be that way, it doesn't look enough like wood.
I don't know about that, but as i said, you may have to work with more different tools too.

And last thing, if your budget can afford it, you may try different paper brands and types. It adds a lot in terms of rendering better.

Very promising work, congrats!

Peace,

DKJ

Love it! It DOES take time if it's going to be good! There are no shortcuts when it comes to shading.

Yeah I hear what you’re saying. I only used two pencils, an HB and a 6B. The real reason I think the textures are the way they are though is because all of these pieces are done out of a sketch book with really toothy paper. It’s the same paper I draw traditional flash ideas and anything else on. It’s close to impossible to get soft textures on this paper. If I was doing this on a smooth paper it would come out way softer for sure though so maybe I’ll purposely do something on smooth paper to see what happens.
