The worlds of tattoo artists and makeup artists are often closely related. After all, each role focuses on changing the overall body image of another person!

That’s certainly the case when it comes to eyebrow tinting. This is a trend that is sweeping the nation, and many see it as a viable option to procedures such as microblading.

However, there is still a lot of mystery surrounding what this process is, what it has to do with tattoos, and who it’s for. Keep reading if you’re ready to unpack this particular mystery!

What Is Eyebrow Tinting?

In a way, “eyebrow tinting” is a procedure that is described by its very name. This is a process where someone has special dye applied to their eyebrows in order to change the color.

As procedures go, this is purely cosmetic. The intent is to help someone control the look of their eyebrows and to give that look an enhanced color, shape, and overall appearance.

That leaves an important question, though: is eyebrow tinting a form of tattooing? The answer to that depends on who you ask.

Is It a Tattoo?

Like we said before, many see tinting as an alternative to microblading. And microblading is definitely a form of tattooing: that procedure uses needles to add pigment to eyebrows and serves the same role that tinting does.

Eyebrow tinting is less extreme because there are no needles involved in it. Instead, a special dye is applied to the eyebrows in a procedure that lasts as little as 15 minutes.

You don’t need a tattoo artist to apply this dye, though some offer that service. You may be able to get a procedure from your makeup artist or even buy a kit and do it yourself.

What Are the Pros?

Now you know more about what eyebrow tinting is and what it is not. That leaves a more fundamental question: why should someone get their eyebrows tinted?

First, it provides an easy way to change a major aspect of your face. Giving brows more color and definition is a way of getting a “whole new you” without getting something extreme such as plastic surgery.

It’s also cheap and easy. The process is far more affordable than microblading, and it takes next to no time to complete a dye session.

Basically, you can look younger and more vivacious without breaking the bank or spending all day in a salon.

What Are the Cons?

We all know that nothing is perfect. And as cool as tinting is, there are a few drawbacks you should be aware of.

First, the dyes are not approved by the FDA. Some people have been known to have bad reactions to these dyes, and California has made it illegal for professionals to offer eyebrow tinting services in order to protect its citizens.

Second, it can be more difficult to correctly dye gray or white hair. And if the color isn’t a good match, you won’t just have mismatched eyebrows: you’ll be stuck with them!

Finally, tinting becomes an ongoing process. For best results, you’ll be tinting every month or so, and that’s a major commitment that may negate how much time and money you saved versus microblading.

Eyebrow Tinting: Final Thoughts

Overall, we think eyebrow tinting is fine to try out, but you’ll get longer and better results from microblading. Just ask your local tattoo artist about the process.
