Our Favorite Stencil Paper

Spirit Thermal Stencil Transfer Paper

Clear Cut Stencils

Our top choice for tattoo artists is Spirit Thermal Transfer Paper. It’s the industry standard for professional tattoo artists and creates a dark stencil that holds up throughout the course of the tattooing process.

Understanding Stencil Paper

Before we dive into how to pick the right stencil paper and the best practices for using it, it’s important to know what is important to look for.

First, you want your stencils to turn out dark and easy to see. Cheap stencil paper will leave you with a super light stencil that is difficult to see while you’re tattooing.

Second, you want your stencils to last throughout the whole tattooing session. Generally, you need to apply the stencil and wait about 15 minutes for it to dry. If the stencil is high quality, you will be able to dab the skin as needed without losing your stencil. (We do not recommend ever rubbing across the stencil to avoid rubbing it off.)

Advantages of White vs. Clear Stencil Paper

Choosing between white and clear stencil paper is a crucial decision for tattoo artists. Each type has its advantages, and the choice depends on the specific requirements of the tattoo design.

White Stencil Paper

White stencil paper is often the top choice for many tattoo artists due to its ease of use and lower price. It produces dark and easily visible stencils.

Clear Stencil Paper

Clear stencil paper provides unique advantages. It allows you to see through the stencil, making it easier to align with existing tattoos for "filler" pieces or to place cover-ups. While it may not be as versatile as white stencil paper, it is an invaluable tool when working on complex designs or scenarios where visibility is most important.

Picking the Right Stencil Paper

Selecting the right stencil paper is crucial for a successful tattooing experience. Cheaper, low-quality papers can result in faint and ineffective stencils, leading to costly mistakes and time-consuming touch-ups.

Investing in high-quality stencil paper ensures you'll see your outline clearly throughout the tattooing process. Always choose trusted brands and products.

Stencil Paper Maintenance and Storage

Properly caring for your stencil paper and storing it correctly is just as important as selecting the right paper. Here's how to properly store stencil paper:

Keep Stencil Paper Dry

Stencil paper is susceptible to moisture. Store it in a cool, dry place to prevent it from becoming soggy and unusable. You can use airtight containers or resealable bags to protect the paper from humidity. Additionally, avoid working in overly humid conditions, as this can also affect the performance of the stencil paper.

Protect from Sunlight

Direct sunlight can fade the stencil paper, which will keep it from working correctly. Store your stencil paper away from UV rays and fluorescent lights.

Prevent Creases and Folds

Folding or creasing stencil paper can result in irregular lines and imperfections in your design. When not in use, lay your stencil paper flat or gently roll it up to avoid permanent damage. Creases can cause issues when using the stencil machine.

Tips and Tricks for Using Stencil Paper

To achieve the best results with your chosen stencil paper, consider the following tips and tricks:

Allow the Stencil to Dry Properly

After applying the stencil to the skin, allow it to dry for 15 to 20 minutes. This crucial step prevents the stencil from rubbing off prematurely during tattooing. Failing to let the stencil dry can result in smudged lines and an inaccurate design.

Protect the Stencil While Working

While tattooing, it's important to keep the stencil from getting wiped off. Applying a thin layer of Vaseline or a specialized product like Green Glide over the stencil will protect it from smudging or fading during tattooing.

Make Slits for Curved Areas

When working on curved areas of the body, such as arms or legs, cutting small slits around the edges of the stencil paper can help it conform to the skin's contours more easily. This technique ensures that the stencil follows the body's natural shape.

Become a Tattoo Artist With the Artist Accelerator Program

student work from the Artist Accelerator tattoo artist training programs

Having a career in tattooing is not only fulfilling, but it’s also the most stable way to make a living as an artist. However, for decades, the process to become a tattoo artist has been notoriously difficult.

The apprenticeship process requires aspiring tattoo artists to work 50-60 hours a week without pay for 2-4 years. That, combined with the toxic culture of abusing apprentices, makes getting into the industry almost impossible for newcomers.

That’s why we created the Artist Accelerator Program. Our online course provides a simple, structured way of learning to tattoo that has been proven to work by over 2500 successful students, with many of them having gone on to open their own shops all around the world.

Inside the program, we’ll take you through every step of the tattooing process in 9 clear, easy-to-follow modules and support you along the way within the Tattooing 101 Mastermind online community.

In the Mastermind group, you’ll collaborate with other students, get answers to your questions, and receive personalized video feedback on your artwork and tattoos from professional tattoo artists. With this friendly community of both new and experienced tattoo artists, you’ll never be stuck again.

When you join the Artist Accelerator Program, you’ll have instant access to the full course and the Mastermind community, as well as our 30-Day Flash Challenge and recorded interviews with tattoo artists from all over the world.
