Hi guys,

I'm a total beginner starting out, mainly practicing on myself and fake skin. I'm struggling to find information online as to how to gauge the correct voltage and needle tip pertrution on my DragonHawk Atom Rotary Pen that I've bought. I also can't seem to find any solid information on what is the best voltage to use for each size needle other than "play with the voltage and see what suits you best" lol.

I've been only using a WJX 1005RL (long taper) to practice line work on myself so far, playing with the voltage from 6.5-7.5. However, I really can't for the life of me understand the difference the voltages have on the tattoo / needle. I've also been protruding the needle to a maximum 4mm sometimes 3.5mm because I read that that's how far you want the needle out for long taper needles and line work.

I've only bought long taper needles as well because I'm only really interested in doing line work for now before.

I was hoping someone could share their experience and best set-ups for voltages and needle protrusions for rotary pens, for the below needle sizes? Thank you so much in advance from a complete rookie!
  • 1005RL - WJX long taper
  • 1009RL - WJX long taper
  • 1209RS - WJX medium taper
  • 1207RL - EZ Revolution long taper
  • 1203RL - some cheap brand that came with the kit
  • 1203RS - some cheap brand that came with the kit

For rotaties volt equals speed. General rule is faster for lining, slower for shading. What volt works for you largy depends on your machine's working volt range, personal preference, skin type and hand speed.
There's no magic number, mostly trial, error and practice.

As for protrusion... do you mean the actual needle protrusion or the stroke of the machine?

And be careful with the 10's, they easily cut up skin.
