yea mags are wierd, even though they are easier on the skin trauma wise, you usually get way more bleeding from them.

they also hurt way more when tattooing self
yeah exactly what you said the moment i touch my skin all this blood and then i watch people on youtube and they use them like paint brushes and no blood from what i see and i barely have them stick out past the tube to the point i have to angle it to make contact with the skin and i still cause alot of trauma so idk what the hell im doing wrong

8v on hummingbird sounds extremely high. Hummingbirds usually runs at much lower volts than other rotaries. But maybe they changed that on the newer versions.

To me, even if i never used a mag, 8V seems pretty high for them.

yeah...turn down the voltage. If it's not the answer you want, it still might be the answer.

From the Hummingbird website Recommneded voltage 4-6V DC. (5V for long hours)

wouldn't it stand to reason that if you're 2v over the highest reccomended setting that may be a factor in your inability to not hurt yourself?

You're using almost twice the recommended power. Now put a flat line of needles under it. I don't know rotaries, but from what I understand the power also increases speed, which means you've just created a blade with that needle setup.

Are you getting any ink in the skin? How does it looked healed?
yes the ink goes in but when its healed it just looks like a scar basically which would make sense now if somebody has a machine that recommends 9v for linning and 8 for shading how would that work since we are going by recommended?

there are so many different machines. YOUR machine does not have those recommendations. The hummingbird website gives guidelines and you are way outside of them.

if it just looks like a scar, that is validating that you are tearing the shit out of your skin. Try the same mags at 5v, and trust the process. It will take longer but it will heal and hurt a lot less.

Believe it or not (Timmy ?), I've used mags a lot - actually prefer them big time to round shaders - and never had this experience. Neither the bleeding, nor the pain.

no difference in the usage...only thing is one will give you softer edges with a little less effort. It's still just needles going into the skin.
Update i purchased some 7cm from bishop da vinci and lowered the voltage and hand speed and it went in like butter 2 hours later and no pain no swelling thanks guys?

just my personal experience, when i ask clients not really a definitive answer what hurts more, but when i tat myself the mag is like a fucking blowtorch and the liner is just "moderately" painful hehe

but compared to a liner there is always more exude/blood, this might just be from the fact that u can get way more surface area vs a liner

Interesting! The only time a client complained when I used a mag was when I tattooed rapidly over a larger surface with no ink, and no water, before going over it with ink. I had read that you could do that do that to open the the skin and get the ink in better. He almost screamed (and he usually didn't say a word even though he felt everything was pain with the tattooing ?).

I later learned that the needles get so hot when not dipped in ink or water ? Never will try that method again. And it most likely wasn't the mags fault, it would have been the same effect no matter what needle.

I Have also understood later that there is a discussion whether the ink really goes in better when "opening" the skin or not.

the needles can get so hot with friction they can melt the end of the plastic tube, you can usually smell the plastic melting, it will also slow the machine down as the ink/water acts as lube, this is why when tuning or rebuilding a machine you dip the tube in water and you can hear the speed increase.

Welcome to the forum. Come play with us in premium...it's like $14. Worth every penny.

for the record...it's wasn't the mag, it was the voltage.

It could also be that you dont have enough needle coming out. If you were getting ink in the skin but nothing really there after it healed, tells me that , coupled with the high volts, all u did was just tear up the top layers of skin.....
