First clientish

So my cousin flew in from Midland and he's been bugging me about doing a tat for him. He said he was fine with it being not professional and the shop owner said its be good practice for dealing with a client.
So I treated it like one from start to finish tried a 9 rs for line work. Afterwards I realized I should a used a thinner needle for some of the inside detail but my cousin loved it so I'm ok with that

Here we go...

Your lines are WAY better on flesh than practice skin.
Your curves have corners where they bill rolls around
the corners of the bills line up and you didn't appear to "stall" and leave dots
have NO idea what's happening in the face
there is a spot in the upper right side of the tattoo where you got a decent gradient on the bill
Holy shit that face...I mean, holy shit.

Good tattoos start from good ideas. This picture...if I recreated it on paper based on what's on skin...is not a good foundation to build off of. I learned that one a long time ago, not it's your turn. Crap designs make crap tattoos...they don't magically get better on skin.

Your linework is a HUGE win for you in a lot of this tattoo when you compare it to your practice stuff...so props. Take whatever you did here and PRACTICE...it will help.

Practice drawing...practice seeing where you're light source casts a shadow. You are not going to want to do this, but draw this design on paper and let's critique the design and talk about what you'd do different.

I'm 7 years in and I STILL find stuff I'd do different...it's ok that it happens.

Yeah I can see what your saying about that when it comes to design I changed up some things and left it pretty light to go back later to color it cause he wanted some green i also plan to do some smoke when i feel confident in that since I've never drawn smoke on paper much less tattoo it. But I can see where my shading gets a bit confused.
I used it as a small reference mostly and tweaked it a bit since the res wasnt the best

Good job Albert, bit hard to make out the face but like you said may have been better with a smaller needle. What i don't understand is there seems to be lots of people on here working in shops that get hung out to dry by the people who are meant to be tutoring them? if they are not going to tell you what needles to use etc you may as well work from home and teach yourself.
It looks like the clients skin is dark so that doesn't help with the design not being very readable. But yeah, no blowouts and solid lines even with a 9rs, nice.

Totally agree with David, very strange with these apprenticeships where the mentors don't teach.

I have a hard time understanding the face part of the tattoo, to be honest. I have to agree with David, if nobody tells you, in a shop, to use a liner and a smaller grouping, you might as well start from your own home and figure it out there.

Nice work Albert, much better than the practice skins. Still a way to go, but your looking good.
