So I’ve been leaving the tattoo machines alone a little bit and focusing on art skills a lot more. I know in another post I had mentioned that the tattoo studio where I’ve gotten a lot of my work done had posted that they are looking for an apprentice when their studio remodel gets finished. Long story short, I’ve been in constant communication with the shop owner who I’m pretty cool with and he’s been having me send him everything I’ve been drawing. Essentially, he wants to see my working portfolio I think and he’s also given me a ton of advice over the past few weeks. I’ve literally been drawing like 7 to 10 hours everyday for the past 3 weeks. I don’t know if it’ll end in an apprenticeship for sure, but either way I’m learning a ton right now so I’ll take it.

Anyhow, here’s the portrait I recently did. Believe it or not it’s my first one and I’m super happy with it. It took me 9 hours and it was all done with a mechanical pencil.

Yeah I left all of the pencil marks instead on purpose instead of using a blending stump to smooth everything out. I like that from 5 feet away you’re like “yeah, that’s a photo of Christopher Walken”. But when you get right up to it you can actually see what makes the gradients.

There actually is a lot of texture in his skin when you look up close at my reference photo too.

I learned that the trick is to just stay with it no matter how shitty it looks at first. I wanted to quit after the first hour but then I stepped away and looked at it from a distance and I could start to see it taking shape so I just kept going.
