I'd agree with it being the numbing cream. I had a client use Hush numbing cream for a rib piece. The directions said to lather this stuff on and wrap with plastic wrap about an hour before the tattoo. Now he said it worked great, however for me it was a nightmare. What i've have found and noticed is that numbing creams/sprays have a tendency to contract the skin or tighten it up and makes it very difficult to get proper penetration....Now when the guy came back for the second sitting I advised him to not use anything, and it was night and day for getting the ink in there. If anything I'd say vasocane or bactine but like TexasPT said it's really only somewhat affective after the skin has been broken, and I would recommend only using it if absolutely needed to get that last 30 mins to hour done. With bactine I've found that pretty much any more then 2 applications and the skin starts to tighten up and fights you.....

) to get tattoos, and allows the tattooer to work without whining and jumping and moaning from a client, but i think has taken away the earn value of a tattoo.
Don't we all my friend, don't we all. around here most tattoo artists wont use numbing creams or patches at all the only exceptions are for cosmetic tattoos (my 73 year old mother in law got her eyebrows darkened because they are gossamer thin and white) from the artists I have talked with it seems to be about 50/50 that it makes the job harder or the pride thing where they feel if their customers cant take it they dont get it. I generally nap during tattoos at this point except that one on my elbow I was wide awake for that one I promise you. But every person has different nerve clusters and what painful for one person another barely feels. so don't go on the hype of one location hurts more than another except in the most general way. meatier fatty areas generally hurt less unless they are close to nerve centers (like nipples) bony areas tend to hurt more. areas like armpits nipples genitalia tend to be top. I Hate pain but I have 3 brands and dozens of tattoos. I think if you just go for it you may like it.
